What Is MOQ for Custom Plush (And Why a Low Per-Design Floor Works)

MOQ — minimum order quantity — is the smallest run a factory will commit to for one design. On a custom plush project it is where a buyer’s budget meets the real cost of opening a production line.

What “MOQ” means on a plush project

A custom plush toy is not pulled from a shelf. Each design needs its own pattern, cutting setup, material sourcing and a production line that has to be arranged and staffed before the first unit is sewn.

MOQ is the quantity over which that setup is worth running. It is quoted per design, not per order: if you launch several characters at once, each character carries its own minimum.

Our starting point per design

That floor is low enough for an independent creator, a gift drop or a brand pilot, yet high enough for the line to run efficiently. It is a starting point, not a ceiling — many projects begin well above it.

Why a very small MOQ is hard for plush

Plush is assembled by hand across a chain of stations — cutting, sewing, stuffing, closing, any embroidery or printing, and finishing. Spreading that per-unit labor over a tiny run raises the cost of each piece sharply, which can make a very small order uneconomical for both sides.

A modest minimum keeps unit cost sane while still letting a first project stay small enough to commit to.

The timeline behind your first run

Before mass production begins you approve a pre-production sample, so the sampling stage sets how quickly a project can move.

Once that sample is signed off, production runs to a schedule set by the style and the quantity you commit to.

Can I order fewer than the minimum?

A pre-production sample or a test run can sometimes sit below the full order minimum, and the smaller quantities we can evaluate for a specific design are confirmed during the initial review. Because that depends on size, materials and construction, we deliberately do not publish a fixed small-batch figure — it would be guesswork.

The honest answer to “can I order fewer” is: share the design and the quantity you have in mind, and we will tell you plainly whether it works and what it costs.

What to settle before you request a quote

Lock the design reference, a target size and a material direction, then bring a quantity you can realistically sell or give away. Those inputs move the minimum, the sampling plan and the unit cost together more than anything else on the project.
